Supreme decoration
But denial is essentially antipathetic to Matisse. He was a great celebrator, and to many his most characteristic pictures are the wonderful odalisques he painted in Nice (he loved Nice for the sheer quality of its warm, southern light). Though such a theme was not appreciated at the time, it is impossible for us to look at Odalisque with Raised Arms and feel that Matisse is exploiting her.
The woman herself is unaware of him, lost in private reverie as she surrenders to the sunlight, and she, together with the splendid opulence of her chair, the diaphanous skirt, and the intricately decorated panels on either side, all unite in a majestic whole that celebrates the glory of creation.
It is not her abstract beauty that attracts Matisse, but her concrete reality. He reveals a world of supreme decoration: for example, the small black patches of underarm hair on the odalisque are almost a witty inverted comma mark round the globes of her breasts and the rose pink center of each nipple.

I simply love and adore Matisse. His use of color is a marvel I can't get my muse to imitate.
I spend hours here.
*sigh*
wv: ratedi= rated "I" for inspiring.
Thanks for this whole blog!
I will link you today, as I am studying Matisse, too.

R.I.P.
The word for today is "rest".
I had never been able to put in words what I got from Matisse, but that's it.
I cannot think of a lovelier mind with which to be in sync than QP.
Fortunately being such a minor satellite, I exert no negative influence in turn.
I'm planning to view the Matisse original in Houston Friday - No "Black Friday" for the qp.
Thanks for the wonderful Olga link Joan; it had slipped my art detector.
Casey, glad my humble 'Torum did not slip your art detector. I found your R.I.P. post very illuminating. Surely the spiritually sighted cannot miss that Van Gogh's canvases are saturated with noetic light. Alas...we are exiles in Babylon.
You are so kind 'Shroom...and as well, an electrifyingly positive influence always. (Rest assured I'll soon get myself over to the Jungle to get the sync).
